Re: What you are READING right now?
Hehe yeah, although there are a lot of hints that indicate that the man knows what happened, even a few that the boy does too...
I took the scene with the wife (having the baby, the one part she's in) as: she's suicidal for sure, but why is not clear. Just thought maybe you picked up something I didn't.
I loved the abrupt convos between the dad and the son. Really brings forth the characters as the quiet type, male conversation, etc. But its really interesting the way that they convey things to each other WITHOUT saying something directly. I loved that.
I took it as a really fresh look on an increasingly overpopulated theme. And god DAMN those paragraphs of scenery description.....and I HATE overanalysis of setting usually....![]()

Re: What you are READING right now?
I think the wife was just overwhelmed by the futility of living - she couldn't see how there could be anything worth staying alive for, even love, because there was no way in her mind that it could end well.
And yeah, conversation and scenery... beautiful. The whole book. Nuff said, because there's not much else to say.
I doubt it's still in theatres anywhere, but definitely check out the movie when you can (came out in November, had Viggo Mortensen as the man). It's not quite the peak masterpiece that the book is, but it is possibly the most accurate book-to-film adaptation I've ever seen. It's very good - directed by the same guy who did The Proposition (and also with Nick Cave & Warren Ellis on music). Just fyi.

Yeah, I'm waiting for video on that, I don't think I could convince any of my friends to go with!

Re: What you are READING right now?
good call queenie, it was indeed worth a try, iv attempted to make it to the end of the simpering girlie shite version a couple of times (with the intent of understanding why i had accused of a 'darcy act' (i assumed darcy was one of the girls, so was very 'wtf?!')) and basically got nowhere... even just watching a movie of it.... a little brain eating helps a lot ![]()
next up, sense and sensibility and sea monsters ![]()

Re: What you are READING right now?
Jane Austen is actually quite highbrow social satire and humor. Apparently. Couldn't get through any of it myself.
Anyway, after the success of P&P&Z they've done a prequel, Dawn of the Dreadfuls, as well as Sense & Sensibility & Sea Monsters. The author of PPZ just came out with:
and there's all sorts of other things, like Queen Victoria Demon Hunter and Jane Slayer. You know. Just in case you want to get really involved. (Ask me about paranormal romance books.)

Re: What you are READING right now?
OOPz, I don't know if you've read this, but this connects a fair amount to what you were just reading. Music from a very scientific point of view:
The first 2 or 3 chapters are completely useless if you know your musical terminology, its music theory 1.01. Skip 'em, get to the good shit.

Re: What you are READING right now?

About raising consciousness. Pretty cool. I dug it. better have just read the wiki though... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_Way), 'cause its a brick. Consists mostly of Q and A. Main ideas are on eliminating negative emotions and that kind of thing. Sheds an interesting perspective on Christianity though, as a more esoteric religion with a deeper meaning, claiming people don't scratch whats on the surface level, even those who read the Bible for allegorical and metaphorical means.

Sarah Waters - Tipping the Velvet
loving it so far... good sense of humour, beautifully written and actually does the trick of being romantic without resorting to cheesy sappy shit...

Re: What you are READING right now?
^^I'm really torn about the Dexter books. One of the few cases where the film/show IMPROVES upon the book in some areas.
The only thing I liked about the Dexter books was it put you in his head better, showed the inner conflict better...

Re: What you are READING right now?
Yes, that´s true. The first book was really great but the rest are not as great as the series, tbh.
But Dexter is a pleasure for me and it´s complex enough to make me enjoy both show & books
